Introducing March’s Rising Stars!

Congratulations Marcus and Sandra!

Cookie Cart chooses two youth employees each month as our Rising Stars. Our program staff work together to determine which young people are striving to be their best. They look for a positive attitude, mindfulness of adult staff and youth peers, strong attendance to scheduled shifts, and demonstration of initiative and willingness to help others.

What makes Marcus and Sandra stand out? Read questions from an interview with them below or stop by our bakery to meet this month’s Rising Stars!

Marcus

How long have you worked at Cookie Cart?
3 months – I applied to work here because I heard it was a good place to work, I had friends who worked here, I wanted to earn some extra money, and it gave me something to do after school when I’m not playing football, wrestling, or baseball.

What is your favorite thing about working at Cookie Cart?
It’s a family environment where you work hard, but you still have fun. I get to build experience through all different styles because sometimes you work alone, sometimes you work as a team. You never know what’s going to happen here.

Why do you think that we chose you for Rising Star?
I show up on time. If I make a mistake, I make sure everything gets straightened out. When I’m working, I focus on the objective and get it done first. I have the right attitude and don’t get into any drama.

What is the secret to your success?
Having a good, positive attitude towards everything. I remember that you’re at work to work, even if you don’t want to. Cookie Cart relieves my stress, and helps block out any bad attitude I might have, like if I make a mistake at school, I think about how I can do something positive when I get to work.

What is your most memorable moment at Cookie Cart?I had a huge order during peak season and didn’t put the cookies in the right order so they had to be flipped around. Chris helped me do it and that helped me have a better connection with my bosses and supervisors, which makes me want to work more and work harder.

What is your favorite type of cookie?
M&M

Can you share some advice on how to become Rising Star?
Stay focused. Stay positive. Everything is going to pay off meaning the skills you learn here will help you get a better job in the future.

What does your bright future look like?
I want to go to a HBCU and study African American studies and Law. I’m a Social Justice Fellow with Minneapolis Public Schools, so over spring break I’m going to visit HBCUs down South. After I’m done with college I want to come back to North Minneapolis and teach African American Studies or be in law enforcement, or both. I want to come back to my community because we need role models for the young people look up to. In 7th grade I participated in Black Male Achievement and I learned the history and culture of African Americans and that helped me be more confident and value myself and my community more, so I’m really passionate about it.

What are the top three skills you’ve learned at Cookie Cart, or have worked on the most?
Communication – I wasn’t that good before, and now I speak up more
Organization – I’m better at time management because of this job
Teamwork – Cookie Cart has been a great place for me to keep off the streets and has shown me other roads to go down that are good and positive.

Sandra

How long have you worked at Cookie Cart?
Since December. I wanted to work here because it’s close to home and my sister worked here when she was a teen.

What is your favorite thing about working at Cookie Cart?
I like that I can expand my connections with people and get to know them. I also like baking.

Why do you think that we chose you for Rising Star?
I’ve started to put myself out there and I finally have a goal to be something here and people have noticed.

What is the secret to your success?
Time management, and working quickly. I’m always trying to be on time, whether it’s for school or the bus.

What is your most memorable moment at Cookie Cart?
When we did new employee orientation and we got to meet all the people we would be working with.

What is your favorite type of cookie?
Double Chocolate Chip.

Can you share some advice on how to become Rising Star?
Have a good ear when you start because that’s what they look for. And be a good communicator and get to know people because it will make your job go faster.

What does your bright future look like?
I want to go to college, maybe at the U of M, and maybe study Psychology. My advisor at school studied it and it sounds like something I would like because it studies the mind and understanding people. During college I want to live on my own and have my driver’s license and maybe have a job while I’m in school.

What are the top three skills you’ve learned at Cookie Cart, or have worked on the most?
Stay organized, know what you’re doing and how to do it, and listen to directions

Congratulations on being selected as Rising Stars for the month of March. The leadership team would like to thank you for all your hard work!
