Introducing June’s Rising Stars!

Congratulations Jada and Saeed!

Cookie Cart chooses two youth employees each month as our Rising Stars. Our program staff works together to determine which young people are striving to be their best. They look for a positive attitude, mindfulness of adult staff and youth peers, strong attendance to scheduled shifts, and demonstration of initiative and willingness to help others.

What makes Jada and Saeed stand out? Read questions from an interview with them below and stop by our bakery to meet this month’s Rising Stars!

Jada

How long have you worked at Cookie Cart?
Since late October. Most of my friends were getting applications to work here, and I heard Cookie Cart was good about helping us with our first job so I thought I would try it out.

What is your favorite thing about working at Cookie Cart?
Smelling the cookies – especially Coconut Toffee. But my favorite task is customer service because I get to see different faces and plus I always have a smile so I’m just smiling extra hard and greet them. And I feel that if I’m smiling then they will reflect that and then we’ll both have a good day from there.

Why do you think that we chose you for Rising Star?
In the bakery, I show a lot of leadership, like if anybody doesn’t know what to do, or looks confused, I’ll just go over there myself and ask them if they need help. Even if I don’t know how to help, I’ll still refer them to Ashley. I also try to be friends with everyone – talk to the new hires and all the volunteers, even when I’m not on the clock I still try to talk to them. And I’m just always so happy.

What is the secret to your success?
Always keep a smile on your face 24/7. And when someone asks you to do something, don’t make a fuss about it, just do it. Even if you don’t want to do it.

What is your most memorable moment at Cookie Cart?
When I made four 20 dozen boxes and I tried to put them on the top of the shelf and they all fell down on me and I had to throw them away but I didn’t know I had to throw them away. So I was just was going to put them back up, but then everybody in the bakery was like “you can’t do that” I was embarrassed, but I didn’t let it get to me though. I learned something.

What is your favorite type of cookie?
Coconut Toffee

Can you share some advice on how to become Rising Star?
Do what you have to do. Keep a positive attitude, stay positive about everything. Encourage others. Everyone makes mistakes so don’t let that get you down.

What does your bright future look like?
I want to be a cosmetologist, but if I change my mind, I want to be a psychologist just to help people out. Cookie Cart is helping me build my communication skills because before I started working here I couldn’t look you in the eye, but I got used to doing it here and used to greeting everyone when I see them. I’ve also learned leadership skills. I used to think of myself as a leader before this job, but now I take pride in it.

What are the top three skills you’ve learned at Cookie Cart, or have worked on the most?
You can do it, stay encouraged, don’t give up, Everybody has a chance.

Saeed

How long have you worked at Cookie Cart?

It makes me happy, if I’m in a bad mood I come here and it’s like playing time for me. It makes me happy, I socialize with friends. I’ve met a lot of friends here at Cookie Cart.

What does your bright future look like?
I want to finish high school with a 4.0 GPA and then go to Harvard University for Chemical Engineering. I want to have my own lab or pharmacy business to make medicines like cures for Ebola, cancer, AIDS, and be a part time manager at Cookie Cart, or be the Sales and Community Outreach Manager here because I want to support youth like they’ve supported me.

What are the top three skills you’ve learned at Cookie Cart, or have worked on the most?
Time management. Leadership – how to rise up and lead peers. Communication – this is very important because when I started I didn’t speak to anyone for 2 months, but then I became a Cart Captain and became confident enough to socialize with friends and make friends.
